Classes


Section 1 – Vegetables

  1. Collection of 5 different vegetables to be chosen from classes 2–12  (to be staged on a tray not exceeding 2’6” x 1’6” overall)
  2. 3 beetroots – tops trimmed to 3 inches (7cm)
  3. 5 carrots (any size) – tops trimmed to 3 inches (7cm)
  4. 2 cucumbers
  5. 3 parsnips
  6. 8 dwarf beans
  7. 5 onions (any type) – dressed
  8. 5 potatoes (any type)
  9. 8 runner bean pods
  10. 5 tomatoes with calyx (green tops)
  11. 6 shallots – dressed
  12. 2 of any veg not listed above (see rule 4)

Judges to pick best veg

  1. OPEN CLASS: Collection of garden produce in a container max 18” x 12” (46cm x 30cm). To be judged by appearance only.

Novelty

  1. giant vegetable
  2. longest runner bean
  3. most misshapen vegetable
  4. miniature, but perfectly formed
  5. chilli grown in 8” (20cm) pot

    Section 2 – Fruit

  6. 5 cooking apples
  7. 5 eating apples
  8. 5 stoned fruit (same variety)
  9. soft fruit – any of the following varieties
    • 12 blackberries
    • 3 stems of currants
    • 12 gooseberries
    • 12 loganberries
    • 12 raspberries
    • 10 strawberries
    • 12 blueberries

     

    Section 3 – Flowers

    Class – Flowers

  10. 3 roses
  11. 3 dahlias (any type)
  12. best perfume – 1 stem
  13. 1 stem of a perennial specimen
  14. 3 stems of a flowering shrub
  15. pot plant – foliage, to be owned by the competitor for at least 4 months
  16. pot plant – flowering, to be owned by the competitor for at least 4 months
  17. pot plant – cacti/succulent etc.

    Class – Flower Arrangements (all classes may include a board)

  18. burst of summer exhibit – 50.8cm (20”) max no height restriction
  19. hedgerow arrangement – 45cm height width and depth max
  20. OPEN CLASS: arrangement in a teacup with saucer (open class, no points awarded)
  21. an arrangement – all foliage, no flowers – max 30cm, no height restrictions
  22. arrangement in a shell
  23. floral headdress

    Section 4 – Domestic

    (all homemade)
    All food must be covered with large clear polythene bags (not cling film) and must be cold.  (These can be obtained at Lakeland.)

  24. tray bake, any type, 5 squares
  25. 5 fruit scones
  26. Victoria sandwich with raspberry filling
  27. OPEN CLASS: alcoholic beverage (e.g. sloe gin)  (open class, no points awarded – judged on appearance only)
  28. cake made with vegetables
  29. 5 sausage rolls, flaky pastry
  30. chocolate swiss roll with vanilla butter icing
  31. 1 loaf of bread
  32. ½ dozen eggs
  33. 1 jar of marmalade
  34. 1 jar of jam (soft fruit)
  35. 1 jar of jam (stoned fruit)
  36. 6 truffles
  37. 1 jar of fruit curd
  38. 1 jar of chutney – to be matured at least 3 months (please label correctly, e.g. “hot”)
  39. 1 jar of jelly that would be served with meat (e.g. mint jelly)

    Section 5 – Handicraft

  42. needle felted animal
  43. needlework, fancy or embroidery
  44. a painting or drawing
  45. hand knitted or crocheted article/item
  46. OPEN CLASS: Sussex theme, any medium (open class, no points awarded)

    Section 6 – Photography

    Max. photo size 8” x 10”, mounted NOT framed

    Section 7 – Family Fun Classes

    (no points awarded)

  55. Berwick Produce Show scarecrow, to be displayed in a public location for the week preceding the show, with a sign advertising the show.  Scarecrow must then be wheeled to the event on show day.

    Section 8 – Children’s classes

    (see rule 5)
    The Judges feel children’s work should be more highly valued than work obviously assisted by parents, bearing safety in mind. Also, children may enter any adult classes but age will not be a deciding factor.

    Cottington Prize

    (for children 15 and under)
    The points from this class do not go towards the Jenny and Robert Blows Cups.  All entrants in this class will, instead, receive a medal.
